On one of our days, we decided to wing it and do our own tour planning. We discovered that one could hire a cab for 3 hours for a couple of thousand pesos (about a hundred US bucks). We had hoped to hit a few of the local ruins near Cancun. As it turned out, since our resort was south of the airport, we were quite a drive away from the ruins in Cancun and only had time to see two of the ruins. It was still a long afternoon trip.
The first place we went was El Rey, and the second (on the next post) is El Meco.
The entrance fee was 70 pesos per person (at 18 pesos to the dollar), so… cheap.
Most of the buildings were originally built of wood harvested from the surrounding forest. Only the foundations remain. The temples were built out of stone, so some of the structures still stand. One thing you’ll notice when you enter is that there are Iguanas everywhere.
We didn’t hire a tour guide, so we just wandered back through the lengthy facility and took pictures. It takes about 30 minutes to walk around and take pictures.
