Assateague is located in Maryland and Chincoteague is located in Virginia. We visited during pony penning week, which is the main event of this island. Ponies are rounded up and herded across the marsh to the mainland where they are auctioned off. Horses run free on this island and auctioning is used to keep the population under control.
